Wow, John. This was a fun ride AND revelatory -- about me!
I too always thought, writing helps me think, usually in the context of someone saying, "what do you think?" or "let's brainstorm." Because my answer was always, "well I do my best thinking alone, when I can write."
And your piece here, helps me understand that it's the social sensitivities and anxieties that tend to throw me into a freeze response, when I'm put on the spot like that. I mean, I think I had a sense of this, having come out as introverted decades ago, but it's interesting to be 70 and still learning about myself. Thank you!
And now cue Old Friends from the Simon and Garfunkel album Bookends.
Thanks so much, Bob! That's one of the things I really struggle with...how long it's taken me to figure out even basic things about why I do what I do. I really didn't realize my writing was related to self-control. Lots of other things about me are related to self-control, but my writing too? In any case, I'm always so happy when someone finds something useful in a post like this. Old friends is right!
This was a beautiful read that resonated deeply. If I may.. I think many of us write to better know ourselves through the proverbial journey of life.
Thank you, my friend! I'm glad it meant something.
Well this was a fascinating read
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
